History

In the quiet and close-knit community of Callaway, Virginia, a dedicated group of individuals saw a pressing need for emergency services in the area. In 1966, these community members came together with a common purpose and a shared vision to protect and serve their neighbors. That year marked the birth of the Callaway Volunteer Fire Department.

The department's inception was a grassroots effort, founded by those who knew the local terrain, the challenges, and the community intimately. The catalyst for its creation was the realization that the nearest fire stations were located in Rocky Mount, Ferrum, and Boones Mill, which left Callaway vulnerable in times of crisis.

In the first recorded meeting, known as the "Volunteer Fire Committee," held on May 10, 1966, elected officer positions were established, including president, vice president, secretary, assistant secretary, treasurer, and registered agent. This meeting laid the groundwork for the department's organizational structure and leadership.

With unwavering determination, the Callaway Volunteer Fire Department embarked on its journey with limited resources but boundless enthusiasm. It began as a humble 2-bay firehouse with a single fire engine, staffed by dedicated volunteers who were ready to answer the call of duty at any hour.

The commitment of these early volunteers was further demonstrated in the meeting held at Callaway Elementary School on February 7, 1967, where the first line officers were elected. C.T. Jamison was chosen as Chief, with Wade Sirk as Assistant Chief, W.D. Messenger Sr. as Lieutenant, and Benard Guilliams as Sergeant. This marked a significant milestone in the department's history, establishing leadership roles crucial to its operation.

As time passed, the department's commitment to its mission became evident through its growth and modernization. The firehouse expanded to accommodate up to six pieces of fire apparatus, ensuring that the department was well-equipped to respond to a wide range of emergencies. In 2009, a new meeting area was constructed, providing a space for training, coordination, and community engagement. The kitchen was also updated to support fundraising activities that brought the community together.

The first recorded meeting held in the new firehouse on June 20, 1967, marked another important moment in the department's history, symbolizing the growth and progress achieved in its early years.

Throughout its history, the Callaway Volunteer Fire Department has faced its share of challenges and triumphs. One notable incident underscored the importance of its presence when an Air Force F-15 fighter jet crashed in the vicinity. Despite the magnitude of the event, the department's rapid response demonstrated its commitment to the safety of the community, ensuring that there was no spread of damage from the crash and securing the scene until the arrival of officials. While one residential home suffered minor damage due to the crash, the department's dedication to safeguarding the community was evident.

At the heart of the department's success lies the unwavering support of the Callaway community. For over five decades, the annual "Ham Supper" served as a cherished tradition that brought neighbors together through food and music. From 1966 until 2019, this event fostered community engagement and solidarity. While the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic impacted subsequent gatherings, the bond between the department and the community remains as strong as ever.

The Callaway Volunteer Fire Department's history is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives, the spirit of volunteerism, and the commitment to protecting and serving the people of Callaway. With a legacy built on dedication, growth, and resilience, the department continues to be a pillar of strength for the community it proudly serves.
